I thought i would start a new post on the current conditions my my 460. I used napas block tester for exhaust gases in the coolant system and it there it is present in the radiator. so i checked each cylinder and found 1 plug is completely plugged up with carbon as the others were a tan color.
I also tried the smoke trick through the booster vacumn line with the throttle body openings blocked off and couple find any vacumn leaks.
would my intake or head gasket be leaking to cause it to puff black smoke under a load, push oil into the aircleaner box from the crankcase breather tube, and have a loss of power?
Sounds like you got broken piston rings or frozen rings on that one cylinder.I'd do a compression check on all 8 cylinders see what you got for compression. Do a dry test first then squirt some oil in the cylinders rerun compression test post your results
meangreen460, i checked and all the cylinders except for #2 get between 150 and 175 on the gauge after 3 revolutions. I cant get #2 do show anything on the gauge, so I tried the leak down tester with 75 psi and it would either blow air out the exhaust and through the oil cap or goes throught the throttlebody.
Make sure that cylinder is on TDC compression when doing the test. That said, if it's still leaking down badly you may want to pull the head. A burned valve or cracked head will cause big problems.
Try putting a couple squirts of oil in #2 cylinder and rerun compression test bad rings you should gain pressure if compression is the same its a valve problem
I has been actinbg like this for a couple weeks. I havent had any head work done at all. And i did try it with oil and it was the same.
I have noticed that if I leave the pvc valve unhooked, it does seem to run alittle better, but the motor is still full of exhause fumes inside the motor and coollant system and will kep pufing out of the pvc grommet while idleing.
Hey guys, i did manage to get the exhaust gases out of the coolant systrm but the #2 plug is still fouling out with carbon deposits and it smokes black soot alittle and still is missing on power. Any ideas? I did check fuel pressure while running and it comes out to 35-40 ans my gauge was leaking a bit.
update! I went ahead and checked the head gasket and couldnt find anything wrong with it or the head. bt am wondering on how to time the dist. My book shows that you have to have the rotor pointing to the #1 wire on the cap while the piston is at tdc, while a ford mechanic told me to put it at tdc and have the rotor pointing to the #1 piston.
I am leaning towards the first option but want to make sure.
Did you not just say the same thing twice (#1 on the cap)?
But both times you left out two steps. The engine #1 piston must be on the comprussion stroke and the SPOUT must be removed.
Got the truck back together and it runs great except for the miss/stumble while giving it gas. Idles great, but misses at diffent throttle positions while towing a trailer. It is also showing no codws except 553.
that miss/stumble is probably just #2 not firing (which you already know). you need to take the heads off at the very least, you are basically just beating around the bush. you have no compression on #2, plug looks like its not firing, you have exhaust in your coolant, and excessive blowby. if you haven't taken it apart already you are just wasting your time.
these engines have such low power that you can rationalize that it runs great, despite only running on 7 cylinders.
