I want to put a 300 into a f150 that has a 400 in it. The truck is a 76. The 300 is from a 78. How complicated is this swap gonna be. Can I use the tranny that's in the truck? The 400 is attached to a 4x4 tranny and I was hoping to use it. Is there a possibility that it will just bolt in...aside from the mounts.
A 400 uses the big block bolt pattern on the bell, 300 the SBF pattern. Is the current tranny a four speed with a granny gear? If so it's probably a T-18 - which might just require a bell change depending on the shaft length.
You will probably need new perches on the frame as well as mounts.
I swapped from a 390 to a 300. I used the same towers, moved one hole forward on the frame, but different m.mounts. You'll also need all the attachments: p/s pump and mount, starter, alt, etc. The trans/or bell needs to changed. I needed to have a shop move the radiator hose fittings.
The 400 uses the same mount perches as a 302/351W.
So swapping a 300 into a 400 truck will require swapping out the motor mount frame perches & motor mounts.
And like BaronVonAutomatc mentioned if you have a manual transmission you will need the 300/SBF V8 bell housing. If you have an automatic then you will need to swap transmissions.
Then you will also have all the little stuff to deal with too. Like the wiring, throttle linkage/cable, kick down linkage ( if you have an automatic transmission, the exhaust system, etc.
