Fifth Wheel Capacity

This has no doubt been addressed in the past, but I'm special so need extra special help.

Specs: 2011 Super Duty crew cab diesel. Dually. Rear axle ratio 3.73. Has 13,000 GVWR package. Airbags, 5000 pounds each.

Front GAWR: 5600
Rear GAWR: 9000

GVWR: 13,000
GCWR: 30,000 (per the Ford towing guide for 2011 Super Duty fifth wheel towing crew cab)

Max loaded fifth wheel trailer weight: 21,500 (per the same Ford towing guide)

Those are the stats for the truck.

Now, the fifth wheel is a toy hauler fully loaded weighing in at 19,500 pounds. Triple axle. Hitch weight is 3,900 pounds.

QUESTION: Do I have enough truck for this trailer? It would appear so from the numbers, but I'm not sure.

I've been trying to figure this out, and not getting anywhere fast. I see a lot of people pulling big fifth wheels with F250s. Or 2500s. Single rear wheel, too. Seems a bit on the daredevil side to me.

Maybe I should trade in the truck for a Peterbuilt?

Any help or thoughts on this is appreciated. If I need to add more info, let me know. Thanks.

I have two stickers in my door. The yellow one tells me the tire dimensions but also the max cargo weight which for me is 2280lbs.

From everything I have read the payload is always the limiting factor before total pulling weight so as long as my family + gear + pin weight do not exceed 2280 I should be fine. Not sure if this works for a dually too.

I re-read that. Your combined weight rating is 19,500 and the RV alone does that; the truck probably figures for another 7000 lbs. A lots of things are possible but this is definitely not recommended and possibly illegal in your area.

I had to edit my initial post as the GCWR was wrong. Ford bulletin states the correct GCWR is 30,000 lbs.

So, maybe I've answered my own questions, based on the Ford towing guide from 2011:

GCWR is 30,000. Trailer loaded plus truck loaded is 27,000. I'm at 90% capacity.

Final answer: Yes. I have enough truck for this trailer. But just barely. I only have a 10% margin for error. At least I'm not maxed out or overloaded. Will sleep better tonight, after answering this bothersome question. Unless someone throws in some facts that skew my info.

It's looking good. Do find your yellow sticker or get to a scale to find out how much payload you can add to the rear.

Mine has a rear GAWR of 6100lbs but I end up with just 2280lbs or payload capacity.

Yours is going to be slightly heavyer as a dually but starting from 9000 you probably have enough for a 3900lbs pin weight + whatever is in the trailer of which 25% would be pin weight on a well balanced load.

If your 5er hitch is 3900 lbs (loaded ?) , then 3900 lbs becomes your "payload" in the box . The balance of the 5er (19500 - 3900 = 15600 Lbs) is your trailer weight .

Your GVWR with 5er hitch attached must be less than 13000Lb (no problem there) .Your 5er rating 21,900 (yours loaded 19500 ) you are OK in that department too . Your GCWR of 30KLbs is plenty to cover your 5er and truck .

It seems you are within your stated specs .

(My 2003 would be overloaded though .Its GVWR: 9800 , max.5er weight: 13,800 Lbs ).

The way you spell it out makes it very clear. Thank you.
