The starter on my 88' Ford F-150XLT keeps chewing the teeth off
of the ring gear on the flywheel! What is the prob? It's a 302 and the engine was installed when I bought it, meaning the engine is not original! Did the trucks come with 6 cly. and are the flywheels and ring gears on a 6cly and 8cly different? Or is it the wrong starter or what! I need my truck! Help me Ford-sters!
Yes Randy they did come in 6 cylinder form. I do believe that a V8 and six cylinder starter are different. May have different size nose cones on starter. I'm not positive on this but you can call your local auto parts source and see if the starters are the same listing for your application. I think you will find that you need a different starter.....how is the ring gear? If it is chewed up it will have to be changed too.
