I just read an article in one of the latest diesel mags about the 'Breaking point" of trannys and reaffirms that Ford makes the BEST trucks ..
The test was to push the limits of a stock tranny till it slips. The Scorpion Powerstroke made 800+ hp and right at 1200 ft lbs before the Ford tranny slipped. The Duramax pushed out around 560 hp and ~800 ft lbs when the Allison tranny stated to slip. 'Breaking point' noted.
Then the test mag had the Allison built by a renouned tranny builder to finish testing. The Duramax then was pushed to the stock limit which was impressive. The Scorpion did not get such the opportunity to test it's might. Discriminatory??? One can argue!
But, once again, 'Ford Tough' is proven. No wonder Ford owns work!!
I watched both breaking point videos, they were awesome. The ford made 880hp and 1600+ ft lb before the trans slipped and they drove it home that night!
The link below, you can see the specs of each truck
I was told by a Ford management director that they took an Allison apart and found all of their mistakes and weakness' and then designed the Torqueshift transmission. Is a very seldom issue when a new Frod tranny has a problem and hardly ever in a dealership for a tranny problem.
You all know the answer to this question. I was a gm tech for 20 years and have seen and repaired oodles of trans failures. I bought my first superduty when i worked at the dealership and i was amazed at how easy they were to work on. I bought my 03 with a blown 6.0. I pieced the engine together with parts and pieces i found for a good deal. I put 60000 km on that engine which i installed at 183000 km. I drove the proverbial crap out of that truck. towed trailers, hauled campers, fire wood you name it. The Trans never backed down once. I am now driving an 09 with a 6.4 and as far as im concerned the superduty is the only truck to buy!
I bought my 2012 F350 Power Stroke Dually in Dec. of 2011. Pulled my 41' toy hauler about 2500 miles on one trip in fall of 2012. Ready to make the same trip this July and was driving around town getting ready, driving across parking lot of truck stop when sudden violent jerk then acting very strange. (at 14,000 mi). Drove straight to dealer. Catastrophic failure, of the transmission, even the case was cracked. took two weeks for the dealer to get all parts and get it back together. Now I am paranoid as hell, every time I hear some odd noise I think it going out again. You can well imagine what would have happened if I had been somewhere in the middle of the boondocks when this happened! I dont have a whole lot of faith in the dang thing now. By the way, I am not a Chevy or Dodge lurker here to cause trouble. Have been a ford guy for ever.
I think all car makers can find strong points and will use those in their videos. Saw a video recently where a denali could climb up rollers but the F250 could not. Are duallys not equipped with locking rears? Or maybe it was a cheaper or older model?
Then there was a test about rear bed twist and how the Ford could not open the tailgate while one wheel was on an incline because of bed twist.
I chose a Ford because I knew little about trucks and most people chose Fords. I also think they look really good and they must do something right in value for almost all fleets to choose Ford trucks.
