I am trying to do a brake job on a 2 1/2 ton rear. I'm trying to get the axle caps ( the 4inch cap that has all the bolts in it in the middle of the brake drum) off.
I have all the bolts off, but it refuses to come loose on either side.
Should I continue with penetrating oil and trying to pry a screwdriver between the cap and the drum? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for all your help!
Thanks for the reply, kehale. In the past I have never had a problem with these. I have only done one or two, and they came off with a couple of taps, but this one is being difficult! I have a big hammer and both sides are not budging.
Has anyone else had problems like this?
Does this particular one screw off?
Not sure.
TIP OF THE DAY: Remember, HEAT makes metal expand. COLD makes metal contract. (I use compressed NO2 to make things cold (for ease of assembly)

I can't see how they would screw off because of the studs going through the outer edge of the cap. If it screwed off, they wouldn't be there. (I think!)
Sometimes the end caps are bolted through the axle shaft (not housing). Just an FYI. I don't know if yours are like this. I might try a little heat (say 200* F) to see if that does the trick.

Usually there is an o-ring or sealant.
I'm not sure in your case.
The bolt that I'm talking about is from the "o-ringed" end cap to the axle.
Sometimes, the hub is splined on the inside. This necessitates the removal of a center bolt.
Other axles just have end cap being part of the axle shaft.
I don't know what kind you have.

I finally discovered "tapered dowels". They are under the bolts on the axle end and I didn't even know they existed. I have all of them out on the left side, but there are two of them I can't get out on the right. The axle comes right out after they are removed, Amazing.
