header question

As the rest of us said "I need more h/p"! I need to know what type of emission mods do I need to do to install a set of shorty headers.I am basically emission free (flowmaster-no cat).I have a 1995 2wd f150 xlt.Installed K&N system, underdrive pulleys,chip,9mm plug wires ,NGK plugs.I only get about 14 mpg and think the headers might give me both power and mpg.How about some help on this issue....

There is alot more emmisions on a vehicle than just the cat convertor. That is just one piece of an entire system that regulates exhaust gasses in and out of the engine. If you plan on keeping your EGR (very good idea), you will need to find a set of headers with this port built right into the passenger side header. Almost all of the popular manufacturers come with some sort of emmisions compatable shorty....Edelbrock and MAC come to mind. These headers are usually a little more expensive than the regular ones but not to bad. Also, make sure you buy a set with an O2 bung or you will need to weld in a separate bung. The place you buy your headers from will be able to tell you if they do or not. For HP increases, most dyno results on a stock 302 with the shorty headers will net you 6 or 7 rear wheel HP which is about 10 or so flywheel.

If your 95 is like my 94, Any shorty styler header will be fine. The O2 sensor bolts in to the y pipe. Mine bolted right up with no issues.

My 95 F250 5.8 had the smog equipment directly after the collectors and no head crossover. While my 95 F150 5.8 had a smog pipe plumbed directly into the pass side exhaust manifold and the head crossover pipe. You really have to look at it to see what you are dealing with.

Summit Racing sells truck headers that they advertise as direct bolt ons.

Do you think it is worth the time and money for the changeover?Or is there something else (besides engine mods)?I recently went back to the oem size tires to help with the mpg.I have gained .3 on mileage. The gear is a 355 could a change be needed?

If you are all for MPG and not for performance, changing gears would be the biggest waste of money you could do to your truck. The cost of changing gears would barely pay for itself in MPG returns even if you drove the truck for the next 300,000 miles. Remember, changing gears has no or very little effect on in town MPG. The headers I hear are very noticable powerwise, but once again, if its only to save gas money its not the best investment. About the only thing you can do that will save you any money is to keep your engine running in top shape with decent tires aired up to the max recommended psi and accelerate as slow as your patience allows.

I put headers on my 95 f150 with a 5.0 engine and it made a big difference, but this was after I had done all the other bolt on mods.

Keep on truckin' ...Mike
