where can I look to fing the Vin number on my truck other then the driver side door and also is there a place that will tell me how to decode the vin number to tell me what I have on my 85 F-250 HD 4x2. I would like to know what tranny i have along what the gear ratio inthe rear end is. Would that by 9in or 8.8in rear end with an automatic?

Hi James,
first of all welcome to FTE .
You'll find the VIN Number on a label which is attached to the left side of the dashboard. You can see the label from outside the truck if you see thru the windshield (driver side /dash board).
Here is an sample how to decode the VIN:
1 FT B F25 G 5 D L A 000
Pos 1,2 & 3 = Manufacter, Make and Typ
Pos 4 = Brakes GVWR Class
Pos 5, 6 & 7 = Model or Line, Series, Chassis, Cab or Body Type
Pos 8 = Engine Typ
Pos 9 = Check Diit
Pos 10 = Model year
Pos 11 = Assemble Plant
Pos 12 = Constant "A" until sequence number of 99.999 is reached
Pos 13 = Sequence number -begins at 00001
Post the VIN in this Forum.
You can't find out which typ of Tranny or rear axle your truck have from this VIN Code.
To find out the Typ of tranny or rear Axle you have to find the ID Tags which are attached to:
Tranny: under the lower front intermediate servo Cover bolt
Axle: to the housing (it dependes on which axle you have)
What engine is in your truck? That would help us to find out the possibilieties...

The truch has the 460 cid that is bone stock. would like to know what is a good carb to put on the truck for a daily driver. I had a 84 F-250 with a 400m that responded better then this 460 with no problems
