Sucking out old fluid?

I have a 95 4WD Ranger that needs to have the gear oil changed. Has anyone ever tried sucking the old gear oil out of their differentials and manual transmission?

Sucking out old fluid?

The transmission should have a drain plug, but many people use suction pumps available at parts stores to empty diffs.

Front Diff
Your truck should use Dex II. I have done it with a small plastic orange pump setup I bought from NAPA (?). Fairly easy. I have done it on Rangers, BII, and Aerostars.

Rear Diff - I have tried, it is very hard because the fluid is thick. You are better off taking the cover off, EXCEPT if you have a plastic cover. Then you need a new cover and it can be a big hassle. One thing, every time I have pulled off a rear cover I have cleaned out a lot of metal dust from the housings. I believe it is better to take off the housing because you will never get that metal out of there with a hose.

Transmission and transfer case - both should use Dex II fluid and both should have fill and drain holes. I forget the location on the transmission, on the transfer case they are on the back. Top left should be fill, lower right drain? It is aluminum on the transfer case so do not over torque the plugs back in, even though they are fairly big.
