Lightbulb Steering wheel

My '86s steering wheel dosen't do much for me. I don't have cruise so that's not a problem. I have an idea of what I would like but I don't know if it would fit.

I was thinking of those 3 spoke wheels that they used in early 80's mustangs and capri's, with the black drilled spokes. I think that would look just right, but would it fit?

I think I could proabably find one easy enough and cheap enough ( I already have a lead on one locally I could probably get for zippo, less me taking it off) but I won't bother if it won't fit.

I don't want to put alot of money into it, and there is no chrome inside so a chrome wheel would be out of place.

Whaddaya think?

If you can get the other wheel for free, then get it and try it. I can't say if it will fit or not. If not, buy the aftermarket chrome wheel with the proper adapter, and grind the chrome off and paint it black.

The mustang/capri (fox body) wheel should fit fine, I belive the steering columns are pretty much the same. Just watch the horn/cruise wiring.

Steering wheel

Well, here I am at my computer with my new wheel sitting on my lap

I tried it in the truck and I have some good news and bad. First off it fits on the shaft (that could have been a setback ). It has the same diameter and the same dish as the stock wheel. My truck dosn't have cruise so that isn't an issue. The leather (?) grip cleaned up really nice, and the three black drilled spokes are pretty good, but maybe I'll redo them.

The drawback is that I had to cut a notch in the back so that it would cancel the turn signals, but that's ok now. Next is that it dosn't meet the column nicely. There is an excessive gap (I could live with) but the diameter is a hair bigger. Maybe I can get a new vinyl hub from something? Next issue is the horn. It is going to take some creativity. I don't know where the stock horn in the carpi was(and I looked) but I'm thinking it wasn't in the wheel. I have the horn button from it but it is missing the center emblem. I figured I could adapt a grant GT center so it won't look like it's missing something, and it will give me something to work with as far as a horn button. And last is that because the gap between the wheel and the column is excessive, the column won't lock, but this wheel dosn't have all of the locking holes in it anyway. Even If I drilled them the gap would be too much for it to work.

I took it for a ride and I like the look and feel tho, so now I have another project. No rush, the stock one is back in there now. I'll get 'er sooner or later
