I have seen supposedly stock 65's and 66's with white, red, or black lettering on the tail gates - FORD. Was there FOR SURE a single color that all the tail gates got. I know you most likely could have 'special' ordered the color you wanted, but wasn't there a specific color that usually came stock? Just setting here with a friend, and well, you know guys. We just gotta know...

Depending on what exterior color, white or red was used, never black. White was used on just about all exterior colors, except white. White trucks always got red letters. Beige '65's came with either white or red letters.
YAAAAA, at least I won part of our bet... I told him the letters never came in black... I've seen, maybe, 4 or5 Beige 65's in my life, and they all had red letters. Everything else I've seen was white. I take that back. I have seen one with black letters. Its one of my 65's. Only because I painted it that way yrs ago...
Doesn't DC sell tail gate letters. Can't remember - read it somewhere. Also can't imagine using stick on letters. I would think they would peel off after awhile. A friend of mine had his taped off and painted on. The watch the paint & body guy tap it off. Steady hands. Even though the letters are raised, he used a tape measure to make sure the tape was even. It was amazing to watch a professional.
LOL...black is the least common of the colors for the letters..Ive seen 2 or 3 in my life...the colors used on our trucks are the same ones used into the 80s as far as lettering colors go...occasionally they were not painted seperate of the body color though.
Masked and all,
I just went though this with the tailgate letters. I ordered decals from one of the suppliers of parts. They listed two different ones for a '66 f250 so I bought both to make sure I got the right one. Both were terrible. Didn't fit at all.
I bought a set from Graphic Express. (www.graphic-express.com) They are Ford Official Licensed and their product shows it. Fit perfectly, instructions were very helpful. I don't know about the long term, but they are great now. It was my only option as I don't have a painter that will do it.
The FORD gate letters were either red, white or black...white trucks got red..black trucks got white ones.

My truck, a '61 F-350, appropriately carries a 9' Styleside bed, aka, "wrong bed." Were the FORD tailgate letters on these (earlier style) beds painted when they appeared on a '61? My tailgate appears to have been re-painted so I can't comment based on what I see today. And I can't find a reference on the '57-'60 forum to paint on the tailgate letters, where I thought I might find the answer for these (earlier style) beds.
Sorry about the small font size: it seems to happen whenever I attach a photo!
Must have had a cold and kept sneezing as they painted the letters. I'll have to look close at my (very similar) white tailgate to see if it was done by sneezy, too.
Bill, you need some covers on those chains if you haven't yet....

I believe they were using a brayer which is what I will be using. The letters were never taped off and sprayed if you look closely at an NOS tailgate. Too much time and trouble. If you are good with one of these tools you can lay paint down very fast. This will replicate the edges and the fact that the color under was never completely obscured.
