Changed out entire cooling system on 99 Navigator this weekend (thx to Alloro) anyway when I was pulling the fan clutch, the 18" Adjustable wrench made contact with the alternator, it is magnetized BTW. This is exactly why they tell you to disconnect the negative cable on the battery. Next time I will follow directions, it was a $130 mistake Finished up the repairs and went to start...dead battery, jumped it, ran it for a while and it started back up. Went inside to get a drink came out....dead!!! Ignorance cost me a new battery!!
Touching the wrench from the fan nut to the alternator for a moment shouldn't have killed your battery. Blow a fuse yes, but kill the battery no. Something else drained the battery or it was on it's last leg and ready to give out on you anyway.
It was just to weird, right after I did that I noticed interior lights were off, naturally I had to wait until I got everything back together. Sure enough it was dead as a door nail.

Went to auto parts store to have the alternator tested...they said it was charging fine but the diode was stuck in the open position. I asked where is the diode, he said down deep in the alternator. So does this mean I need a new alternator or can this diode fix itself?? Anyone have a quick repair?? Last thing I want to do is spend $170 on a new alternator.
Not real sure what to think of those guys at the auto parts store
BTW, I took the bulb out of the underhood light a long time ago when it would not shut off.
Ok, went out to start the Navi this morning and nothing....no click click click...nothing. Yanked the brand new battery out put it on a charger, took the alternator out went straight down to Autozone and bought a new one. Got it back in, wired, battery in and it fired right up...no problem...knock on wood.
Still think not disconnecting the negative cable on the battery while installing the new clutch fan fried the battery and alternator. This time I took the battery out first and I noticed the alternator was not magnetized
At this pace I will have a brand new 1999-2013 Navigator be the end of the year!!!
My wife backed out of the driveway this morning and I noticed an oil spot...07 Nissan Murano...it just doesn't stop!!! Anyway I reckon that one is for another forum.....Not gonna happen, I ain't workin on any nippendendo!!! Unless it says "Brute Force" on the side of it
These vehicles are putting a huge damper on my huntin season $$$$

BAW HA HA HA HA. What a friggin' moron. A diode is a non-moving, non-mechanical, solid state device. There is no open or close to it. It either works correctly or it blown, there are no other options.
