I'm building a 472 to go into a 79 LTD behind a C-6 and I'm shooting for 3:77 gears. I have an engine budget of Approx $3500 . I have the engine we removed from a running 1970 Lincoln MKIII. Dove-A Block Dove-C heads. OK heres the Bump in the road.. OLd TImer Ford Engine builder VS Local engine builder of all types, but with Lots of Ford.
Local guy has good rep. OLd guy has been building Ford Engines for 50 Yrs. I will give you the the info on the different parts I've been advised by both
Old guy 11-1 PI heads, performer manifold,CJ headers,Forged Flat Top Pistons, roller tip rockers a 1050 Dominator CArb. And a comp 270H or 280H Cam.
Local guy. 10-1 Max, Silvolite pistons, stock rockers, Actually suggested according to his dyno experience a Quadrajet, or Edelbrock 750.
Same intake, same headers, Says Oh it should at least be 400 hp.
I'm torn between the two. I want the biggest torque monster, frame twisting, tire smoking beast I can build. I can change convertors and gears if need be. If I need a can for brakes so what. I don't care about fuel cost..
This thing will be street driven and a pass or two at the track, lowered, doors shaved, monochromatic paint. Paint is next year. I'm leaning towards Real Candy Apple REd or Black cherry.
I know it's not a truck, but it's a 460 and I'm sure I can get some feedback here. THank YOu in Advance..
If it's power your after then go with the old guy. If you want it to be mild for the street then the local guy. I like the old guy set up for what you are describing for your goals. I run a dominator an a much smaller engine and it works fine. You will need a much looser converter. 4500 rpm should be close.
Well from my recent experiance, for what it is going to cost you to rebuild a set of cast heads you might as well buy a set of aftermarket ones from Edelbrock or Ford. I paid roughly $1050 to up the size of the valves, mill them, telfon seal seats cut, new bronze guides, screw in rocker arm stud perch machining, and mild bowl blending. And to think I could have paid $400 more to get brand new heads. But in the long run I think I am better off. I plan on using mine as a daily driver. The alum heads would be nice if I didn't plan on driving it all of the time. Plus they come with CJ ports and a higher exhaust port floor for better breathing.
With your budget, you should be able to go with the aluminum heads. That would definitely be the way to go. I have an engine combo that with the new aluminum heads and a roller cam from Crower will make 525 hp and still have almost a stock idle. If you are looking for more high RPM power you should be able to make close to 650 hp and still be streetable with a 460. LMK if you want anymore details. If you are not worried about the fuel (11:1 with iron heads will probaly need more than pump gas) then go what the old man said. I would however change cams and use something like the 292H or 305H with a 3500 stall. I would also use a Performer RPM or a Torker II for that RPM range. I talked to them the other day about my 460 and they were extremely helpful.
Yes definitely go with the RPM or something similar. I personally prefer the Weiand Stealth. Single plane might be good for you, too, depending on high high R's you intend to go. The regular old performer is basically a stocker that happens to be aluminum. Nothing special, that's for sure.
