HI I am in the stage of buying a new truck and went to the bank and approved for 13gs and was wondering obs or sd 7.3 since I don't have a big budget and what do I look for since I never owned a diesel

Welcome to the forum. We all like the OBS's here but the SD's are good too. There are a few minor differences is motors etc. Depends on what you like. Stay around here and we will teach you 'Diesel' and spend all your money, LOL

Welcome to FTE! The SD have just a few upgrades that the OBS doesn't have, but those are easily remedied. The manual (for reliability) is the best way to go, unless you have about 5k to dump into a bulletproof auto. We do love and most of us prefer the OBS here. What are your goals for the truck?

+1 on the 5-speed; this dude ^^^^^^ actually swapped one in to replace an auto. Slower, but much more reliable, and fewer complications.

Well, I'm older than these guys and I like my auto. Best to put a kit in it, though and there are lots of options for that too. As Glenn said, we like the OBS. Guy pulled up next to me the other day and said, "Last of the real trucks!!" He was driving a late model F150. If you are going to make crazy HP then the manual is best, but if you are driving for mileage and don't want to be pushing in a clutch, I personally think the auto is just fine.

There's a link here on things to look for in buying a diesel.

Also, the stickies at the top of the forum link you to a TON of great information. The Mod/Tech/Diagnostic one is really good.

Welcome to the forum and (hopefully) the OBS group. What part of the country do you live in?

I have 2 '97 powerstrokes, sold my '95 powerstroke. I also have a '99 superduty powerstroke and a 2000 excursion powerstroke.
I like them all, the super duty's have more creature comfort than the obs trucks.
I like the zf6 in my 99 better than the zf5 in my '97
obs F250 4x4's have the TTB front axle where the super duty's have the solid front axle.
for me it would be what body style do you like the best.

as for the automatic trans the 4r100 is better than the e4od, but both can be built to be reliable.

I sure like my OBS, one big pro for the OBS trucks is engine accessibility - the SD cowl covers the back 40% of the engine. here are some other thoughts:

1. The SD has larger injectors from the factory, so more power on tap w/out swapping them

2. The SD will be intercooled, the OBS will not be unless someone added it.

3. The ride quality(if important to you) will be much better in a SD

4. If the OBS has the stock downpipe that is a MUST to replace and its a beeeoootch (at least in my truck it was)

I prefer the OBS over the SD in reliability/workability, its as close to a tractor as you can get with a factory turbo diesel pickup. Personally I wanted a truck with decent power that would start when I asked it to and work when I asked it to... My crew cab OBS has delivered on both counts. there are a thousand other items to think about but the few I listed are obvious differences from what I have learned.

Not a surprise. Most obs trucks up here sell for more than book value. Actually, most all 7.3's do, superduty's included.

I'd say you're gonna need some cash down to get one, jmo. Probably should have anyway. Good luck with your search.
