It is possible that the shift linkage got loose or disconnected. Were you driving and it just quit or were you changinf gears and it quit? If it quit while changing gears manually I would highly suspect the linkage. If it quit while driving it might be several other things.

Have a friend help... One of you watch the transmission linkage under the truck and the other guy shift the gears with the column shifter. You won't need the truck to be running. The linkage should move while you move the shifter. If it doesn't move, trace it to the broken part. Often all that is wrong is a cotter pin fell out.

If it quit while driving I would suspect maybe a failed vacuum line, the linkage, or worst case something in the tranny gave up. If you can't find any bad lines or linakges I would check the smell and color of fluid. You should also check for any broken wires or connectors to the tranny. If you still find nothing, it's time to drop the pan and look for excess particles or maybe some components came loose. Look especially for a filter that has fallen out of place. No filter, no fluid pickup, no move, right.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Here's the bad news: The tranny in your car is an A4LD and they go out. I have two BII's and they both need tranny's. I'm currently rebuilding one. All of the parts to rebuild are easy to find, and not terribly expensive. Your local Ford dealer will have diagrams for the exploded views of internal and external components if you feel like tackeling this job yourself. They will also have in their book a list of problems with diagnostic steps to take. I'm sure they will print these off for you if you ask and that way you don't rebuild the tranny and find that you didn't need to. If you rebuild, do not put it back together and use the same tourque converter, as it will have pieces of what ever part failed floating inside of it.
