So I'm throwing the coolant filter on, but before I do I thought I'd quickly swap out the alternator pulley since the overdrive (smaller) one came in last night. And once the coolant filter is in it'll be a PITA to get in there.
I have taken a ton of surpentine belts off, but never on this truck and for the life of me, cannot see how the heck to get to or move the tensioner. I need to paint stupid on my forehead backwards so I can read it in the mirror...
I'm venting at this point and moving on. But it would be nice to know what the trick is for getting the )*&)&^%$#)(& belt loose!!
there is a half inch drive hole on the tensioner, and it sits at a 45 degree angle, it was so hard to reach and such a pain in the ****, i just stood on top of my motor and pulled the slack to get it off my alternator.maybe someone has pics that would better show the drive spot i also found this thread on the subject https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...werstroke.html
Some folks just unbolt the alternator and tip it so the belt comes off. And they use a rubber bungy to hold the belt tight until they put the alternator back in.
I used this video to help me find that little locking tab latch. I had to pull pretty hard on the belt to get the latch to go. I did sort of a pull hard and then a jerk and press up on the locking tab.
I typed that one in and didn't take any time to search (I know, bad form), but you know how it is when you're in the middle of something... Great links and pictures and a round of Reps to anyone I can give to...
Coolant filter is in (it won't be in the way of the pulley job afterall) -- super easy with this kit but I took my time, shortening some hoses to make for real clean hose routing. Pulley has to be another day as my wife's bike has a bad bald spot and the new tire came in last night. And pretty much all of you know where my priorities better be, and soon...
I hold a long prybar against the locking tab with one hand and grab the belt between the alternator and tensioner with my other hand and pull towards the passenger side. Once I am done, all it takes is another pull and the locking tab pops back out.
I wish I'd known that a month ago. I spent an 1/2 hour trying to get my belt off with the 1/2 drive. I'm glad to know this now for I'll be changing my alternator soon. GREAT QUESTION!!! Thx!
