Converting 460 to diesel

I'm contemplating converting my '85 4WD F-250 with a 460 and T-19 to diesel.
I want one with the least amount of electronics on the engine so I'm assuming that means a 6.9.

I've been reading some and it looks like if I can find a parts truck with a T-19 that, for the drive train, all I really need is the gearbox bell housing, not the whole gearbox. Does that sound right?

Do you tow or do you want to use it as a daily driver?

What's your current rear end ratio?

If I were in your shoes and if I didn't plan to tow heavy, I'd think about putting in a diesel ZF-5, especially if you've got a 4.10 rear end.

Also, there's no difference in electronic stuff between the 6.9 IDI and 7.3 IDI. they both only need one wire (fuel shutoff solenoid) to run. If you've got a choice, though, I'd put a 6.9 in it since they're less prone to cavitation problems.

Both tow (but not particularly heavy, a few tons at a time at most) and daily driver.
3.55:1 axles
A ZF-5 might be nice, but I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible, plus a good used ZF seems to be going for close to what I paid for the truck, $1600. Though I've put around another 5 or 6 in to it.

Thumbs up Gas to Diesel swap

We are nearing the end of a gasser (351) to IDI 6.9 swap. We were worried about the gearing, and have 3.55 gears in a 79 F-150 running 33" tires. There are more specifics about our swap on this and Oil Burners, but I will say that with the T-19, it is o.k.. It WILL run down the expressway at 65 to 70 MPH, though it would be nice if it was at a lower RPM. We have no tach, so cannot tell you what it is turning, but we definitely hear the motor. Around town, though, it is fine. We are also pulling near 15 MPG on the little bit of informal checking we have done. If we were interested in long trip comfort, this might not be the optimum combination, but then again, neither would we be putting a 6.9 in a lifted 79 f-150 short bed. It all depends on your motives.
