I'm not trynig to be cute here..... but you COULD remove the bulb while you're "out and about".
Not an IDEAL solution, but......
Another "brute force" approach (takes a little effort):
Find the #$%^ wire and splice in an on-off switch. and hide it somewhere. If it don't get juice, it won't burn.
It's a shame that Ford shorted a feature like this.
