I think my fan clutch is failing. How do I know for sure if this has happened. Is there a sure way test procedure for this.

I'm sure there's a more "official" testing procedure, but, as I recall, you just grasp the fan and try to wiggle it side to side. It should not move much at all if the fan clutch is good.

Also, I think they tend to make noise when they fail.

From the Haynes Manual......
Viscous Clutch Inspection
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
2. Rock the fan fore and aft to check for excessive bearing play
3. With the engine cold, turn the fan by hand. The fan should
turn freely.
4. Visually inspect for substantial fluid leakage from the clutch
assembly. If problems are noted, replace the clutch assembly.
5. Reconnect the battery cable and warm the engine up. With
the engine completely warmed up, turn the ignition off and
disconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the fan by hand.
Some drag should be evident. If the fan turns easily, replace
clutch.

The disconnect battery is just a liability disclaimer. It is in everything under teh hood.

Thanks for the info Saint Thomas and Oppy. I have tried above procedures and come to conclusion that it needs replacing. Do either of you, have any info as to the removal of fan clutch?

My Haynes Manual only goes back to 93. However, it is my experience that there are two common choices here. It is either held on by the four bolts holding the fan itself on. The other option requires a special tool you can get from any parts store. The clutch will have a notch on it for a wrench shaped tol to fit around. Just turn that CLOCKWISE (it will be left hand thread, more than likely) to loosen it. Good luck.

To check the fan clutch, try the wiggle of the fan blade. You may need to use a wrench to turn the nut behind the blade, instead of the blade. But you can check the wobble by holding the fan blade and pull front to back. If it is loose you will feel it wobble as the other person said, it is bad. Another way is if you can turn the clutch itself it should be quiet. A grinding noise or rough feeling or turning too freely, when turning it means it is bad. It should turn and have a snug feeling, not a loose feeling.
