Hey all, I got a E99 7.3L with around 247,000 and I have read other posts about burning oil Im just curious about my issue. I changed the oil around 2 months ago and I noticed that I got the romps again so I checked the oil and it was low again. Well I had to put around 8-9 qts in and it fixed the issue. Well today I had my truck idling and noticed a little smoke from the exhaust. (Looked like white smoke) When I took off it smoked a little more and then I didn't notice it any more. I have read that it is probably my Injector O-rings. I have not checked my fuel filter for black yet and will tomm. I just wanted to get your opinions on if im going the right direction.
Just to rule it out, check the turbo compressor wheel for in/out and side play, and the exhaust outlet for oil dribbling along way past the turbo seals.
White smoke can also be unburnt fuel, and will smell like it.
A black fuel filter would indicate o rings going south. I'd just add oil as needed until you are ready to do the o ring job.

ok thanks do I pull the tube on the cold side of the turbo to check that I imagine? and how hard it is to replace turbo seals? but I will add oil as needed for now thank you
Does it appear to have a slight haze when the truck idles for a few minutes? I have a similar issue which is pointing me toward needing a turbo re-build.
Right now over the course of 3,000 mile oil changes I will lose about 4 quarts of oil but that's keeping it at the top of the cross marks.
Do you notice any oily mess in the exhaust or does the exhaust have an oily smell when running?
Being almost 15 years old its likely the Injector o rings but, I wouldn't rule out a turbo seal given the age and miles of the truck.
Turbo re-build kits run about 80-100.00, maybe its now is a good time to give everything a thorough once over.
yes it did have a haze to it that how I noticed it, and it had an oily smell also, I didn't notice an oily mess or anything. How hard is rebuilding the turbo? I would rather do that than buy a new one. and what about injector O-rings? I know the glow plugs were a pain in the ash just wondering about these issues.
You will need to remove the injectors to change the o rings. It's not too bad but you need to be careful when installing the injectors back into the cups, mainly torquing the hold down bolts correctly.
FYI. For me how much oil used between changes has a lot to do with oil brands. From the day I bought my truck it uses oil between changes. In the summer if I use Rotella synthetic 5-40 I use 5 quarts in 5k miles. If I use Rotella 15-40 I use 4 quarts. I recently changed to Dello 15-40 and I use 2 quarts. I'm not sure why, but it is what it is. 2+ gallons for the op in how many miles?? Sounds like injector o rings, check your fuel filter, if its orings the fuel in the filter bowl will be black.
Well I just got home and pulled the filter cover off the bowl and the fuel is nice and clean. then I went to the cold side of the turbo and found a little bit of oil in the IC Tube. Im guessing that means I need to replace the turbo seals? Any recommendations on where to get them from? How hard is it to rebuild? Never done one before

I used about 3 quarts of oil between changes, I added Pro Long oil additive to it, and now it does not appear to use any oil, exhaust smell improved as well, you might want to consider it, I add 1 bottle per oil change, the oil inside the IC tubes, and I bet you have an fuzzy oily coating on your boots, and some on the entire engine, that is caused by oil build up in your inter cooler, I recommend draining the oil out of it, and cleaning it out with degreaser, here is a link to articles about it, click on crankcase ventilation kit install, and read it to the end Riffraff Diesel Performance Parts: Diesel Performane Parts Installation Downloads | Up-pipe installation | Regulated Return Installation and more - Installation , I hope this helps some

This is a van turbo rebuild, but as stated in the article, the innards are the same, seems easy enough to me.
If you still have the original ccv set-up, a little oil is normal in the tubes. Did you do the plug the red wastegate actuator line thing? Whenever I did that, my truck started using oil. Once i unplugged it, it stopped until I developed whatever leak i have now.
reality_check, so the oil in my boots is not necessarily my turbo leaking? it could be because I don't have a ccv mod? now im lost. Is this why I have been loosing oil? According to the ccv mod I read on riff raff, Im going to pull my IC and drain it and clean it along with doing the mod. Is this going to fix my issue or do I need a turbo rebuild?
like Carlton Webb said a little oil residue is normal with stock [ oem ]CCV . as far as cleaning the oil residue out its not going to get to the root cause of your oil consumption problem, and the CCV mod you might research it some more, not every one liked that mod. sit back & wait for more info before modding & cleaning .
With the oem ccv configuration oil mist gets sucked into the intake, so some will always be present in the IC tubes and seep around your boots, etc. That's normal. Draining the IC is a waste of time IMHO. Any accumulation will get sucked thru and burned during a healthy WOT.
You mentioned the fuel looked clean; how did the filter look?
