Hey, Everybody!
I have a 1991 F150 SWB 4x4 that I bought salvage but rebuildable!
I bought it because it has a new rebuild on the 351-5.8 engine and the
AOD trans. I don't want a 4x4 and I want to convert it to a 2 wheel
drive truck and loose all the 4x4 stuff, has anyone in this group changed
out a 4x4 back to a regular front end on one of these trucks?
Search the forum for 4x4 conversions, it should just be the reverse of that. Not sure what you're looking to do, but you could swap the axles while leaving the transmission and transfer case in place. Wouldn't hurt a thing. Otherwise you WILL have to change your transmission or swap extension housings.
Leave it in 2wd? Otherwise you'll need the 2wd front axles, and swap/replace the housing on the trans as previously mentioned. You do know that on these trucks the front driveline does not turn when in 2wd like on other trucks. Only when torque is applied do the hubs lock (for auto lock) or unless you lock them in (manual lock). Seems like a lot of work for nothing.
I would sell it as a 4x4 and use the money to buy a 4x2. You'll probably come out with some money left in your pocket. If you're real set on converting, though, you'll need:
Transmission w/ 2WD tailshaft
Longer driveshaft
2WD axle assembly w/ knuckles and hubs
As was mentioned above, I'd suggest just leaving the truck in 2WD, it won't hurt anything. 4x4s go for a pretty penny where I live. The 2WD trucks are nowhere near as popular, and can be picked up for a dime a dozen.
