I'm going to be heading to the high school this year and i was wondering what the best setup would be for this truck. I'll be driving about 150 miles a week and i don't want to be spending $40 or more driving our bigger trucks. I know i want a manual and if i can a 4x4. The rest is unknown to me really. Which motor would be best for economy, reliability, and ease of maintainence? I'll be doing mostly outer roads and gravel, but kinda want 4x4 for going off-road. Better to have and not need than need and not have kind of thing. I'll probably be pulling a single axle trailer with a lawn mower as well on the occasion. Thanks
Except for the 4X4 part, a manual 4-cylinder would be the best fit. The 4.0 rocker arm engine does about as well on fuel as the 3.0. The vacuum operated front locking hubs can get leaky over time, and become needful of maintenance.
You can find a 4-banger 4X4 if you look long enough, but they have not made that combo in a while.

p.s. You don't give a hint of your geographic location, so the need for four wheel drive may be just a desire rather than a strong necessity. Remember, you get to haul around the transfer case and front wheel drive components all the time, and you get to pay for that in filling the fuel tank.

im in missouri and it'll probably be used around the farm every now and then. the weather is almost unpredictable here lol. i have found some 80's rangers withe the 4cyl, 5 speed manual, 4wd, and manual lockout hubs. it sounded pretty good but was sold before i could look at it. i know that manual lockout hubs would be better on fuel too. when did they quit with manual lockers in the rangers?
answered my own question it looks like they kept the manual lockers standard until the new body in '93. i also found that the supercab 4x4 only had the 2.9. it's an option so what kind of mpg does that combination get?
