tech/mechanics pay structures
I'm not trying to find out how much you make

Just that I've read a few things that make me think that techs/mechs don't always work by the hour.
So, if a few of you guys would be so kind as to explain the various schemes for compensation, I'd appreciate it.
It's just a matter of curiosity. I've given up on that working stuff, and if I take my car in, I only hope that whoever works on it feels fairly compensated.
Thanks,
hj
I am not involved in the "trade" but over the years I picked up few tidbits.
One is hourly, you show up and the clock is ticking, some shops pay low rate and workers get commission on any extra parts and services they get you to buy. Good for customer if they catch serious impending problem that could avoid catastrophe but my experience is that they miss serious stuff but every car needs new shocks, loose clamp and you need to replace whole exhaust system.
Another one is flat rate, shop looks in a book to see how many hours a job takes and that's how the customer pays and mech. gets a percentage. Good for guys cause if they get the job done in 1/2 time they still get full hours so some get 16 hours pay in 8 hour day. Bad part is when they spend two hours of head scratching and the problem ends up being a bad sensor that pays 15 minutes to change. Most warranty flat rate pays less which is bad.
Flat rate might have commission attached to it with associated problems.
