I have an 87 F150 5L regular cab and I need a master cylinder but I am told there were two types made a 1 and1/16 inch bore and a 1 inch bore. How do I tell which mine is?
I don't know which size is which, but there is a cutoff in the production date as well. If it's before april '87 it is one part number, if it was manufactured after april '87, then it is the other one. The parts store didn't ask me the size, but the date the truck was manufactured. Maybe this will help you.
I think it's cast into the side of the MC. But since the calipers & rear wheel cylinders are the same, you should be able to use either with no problem. I'd go for the bigger one since, obviously, Ford only used it one year - they didn't like it.
The 1" bore was used up to april of 87, and the 1 1/16" was used april and later. Another question arose: Does the bore size matter when mating the master cylinder to the power brake booster? Other than that, they look the same in pictures. A friend of mine owns a NAPA store, so he's going to get one of each and compare them and see if they are interchangeable or not. The 1" bore MC is actually about 20 bucks more than the one with 1 1/16" bore. I'll post again when I find out something.
One last thing, Steve83, you thought right, the size is cast into the side of the MC. I found a 1 in the side of mine.
Heck, F250 comes with 1 1/16", 1 1/8", 1 1/4". SuperDuty has 1 3/8" All stamped on driver's side. I don't know which will interchange on same power booster. The diesel SuperDuty didn't have a power booster at least not like previous trucks. I've thought of putting a bigger F350 on my F250 but it may warp the rotors/overload the calipers and throw off the ABS system.
For the '87, I've checked on power brake boosters, and there is only one part number for '87, so either master cylinder should work. I'm gonna make sure that is definitely my problem, and replace it (the master cylinder) sometime in the near future, using the larger size (after 4/87).
