5.8 problems

my first post ..be gentle

okay my dad has a 95 f250 with the 5.8L. it ran ok untill 60k and it started to use oil excessivly. ford put a new short block in it and it was running ok again. now it is up to 100k and its getting bad fuel milage (was it ever good) and lost power. Now what could be causing this truck to eat engines. Was there a bad computer problem out there or the other thing I think it could be is the trans isn't working right...any Ideas....

hammer--As you've probably guessed, there is no way to tell what's wrong without an in-depth performance evaluation. From my personal experience, I would avoid the dealer for these types of problems. If you can find a highly recommended repair facility that's been around quite awhile, take it to them, describe as close as you can what it is doing (or the problems), and let them diagnose it. It could be one of hundreds of things.

The 5.8 is a great motor for what it's asked to do. Given good maintenance and reasonable driving, it should be good for 200K before you need to do any block or head work. The tranny is a different story, though. Although it's adequate, it doesn't have the beef to last as long as the motor, unless you get really lucky.

Just my .02 worth.
