So my 96 F250 with a 460 threw lean codes PO171 and PO174.
I checked for vacuum leak. None.
I tested O2 sensors per this site and they checked out. Part 1 -Troubleshooting P0171 and P0174 (Ford 4.6L, 5.4L)
Tested fuel pressure.
Front: 32 psi key on, 32 psi running, dropped to ~29 psi under throttle
Rear: 38 psi key on, 34 psi running, up to 40 psi under throttle
Been driving around on rear tank to see if it will throw the codes again. Nothing so far. Front fuel pump is obviously wearing out. Should I just go ahead and replace it?
If your doing it yourself, you may have the just a plugged pickup screen Like I had on mine. But I'm paying to have it done so I'm having new pumps installed front & rear so I don't have to pay again. (I hope)
You can buy the screens separate for like $7.
Just a note Pay the extra & get a Delphi Pump installed. Delphi made OEM pumps for many manufactures & I have used them in Chevy Ford & Honda they have never failed me. I have others Airtex for one last 10,000 miles & quit me at midnight on a rural Nevada highway, in a snow storm, 100 miles from home.
Well I know is a Delphi pumps retail for around $250 & the Flat Rate to R&R the pump is 1.5 hours, So $350 is a great price with a Delphi. OEM Ford Motorcraft retail for $450 for the pump.
That is why I said something. I haven't got the bill for having both mine replaced yet. It is should be done this week they told me.
I think they use Napa to get their parts. I believe the quote was for a Napa branded fuel pump. The Delphi is only $30 more. I will ask that they use a Delphi if you think it is the next best thing to Motorcraft.
