I was looking into buying a "new" truck. It's a 1991 F250 4spd/OD and a 7.3 diesel. I was wondering what kind of fuel economy to expect because I am tired of getting 7mpg with my truck. And, generally asking, has anybody had any particular problems with this engine/tranny?
The fuel mileage will depend a lot on your right foot, but most guys see around 12-16, I see 12-13 but I drive hard and fast, so naturally I'm on the lower end of the scale.
biggest thing is cavitation. Make sure you check for the proper use of this with the previous owner. Basically cavitation is where the coolant eats through the cylinder walls from the vibration that a diesel generates as it runs. To stop this you run a additive which coats the cooling system so that it takes the hit instead of the expensive metal.
best thing to do is run the truck and get an oil sample done. pdq!
the test will show if there is antifreeze in the oil and that is a pretty good way to see if there is any probs internally
