Question Gears

Next week Im replacing my horrible 3:31 gears for 4:11's, and a TrackLock. Im using 285/75/16 BFG's, is this a decent gear package, or should I go lower?

I have a 2001 Exp. 5.4 4x4. We will be doing light to moderate wheeling. Ive had lockers inthe past, however I figured a limited slip would be fine for our needs. Also, some towing once in a while. I was hoping for better power than before, and maybe better fuel economy.

That's an awesome set-up. One I wish I could do to mine, but just can't quite justify for my driving style. Remember, your effective ratio will only be 3.7:1 because of your oversized tires. What's it going to set you back? I got a quote just for the front and back gear swap of $1200.

Well I wasnt sure if that was enough gear, I only hope it will be enough and still have some economy. I recieved a really good deal at about $1800 complete with all new bearings throught

I just had 4.56's with a Eaton LS installed in a 98 Ex 4x4 4.6 with 305/70-16's. Not sure about the 5.4, but this seems like the perfect setup for the 4.6. Acceleration is so much better. The throttle has developed a sweet spot (other than floored). It doesnt feel like its over geared at all. MPG went from 11 to 12 on the 1st tank. The 2nd seems to be at least 12. I'm very happy with the results!
60mph=2050rpm
70mph=2350rpm
75mph=2500rpm
I'd say mostly city driving, 4.56. Mostly hwy, 4.10.

Thanks Darrell! See, thats my issue, I dont know if I have enough gear. I want to haul butt off the line, and go wheeling around this Nevada sand without a problem. On the other hand, I do alot of freeway trips, and dont want to ruin that either. One guy told me 4.30's, and that sounded way too low. I wanted the Auburn, and my gear shop tried to talk me into the TrackLock, or the Eaton. Any thoughts?

Man, I wish I didn't have two small children and a wife who's on maternity leave who's getting a new Sequoia in a couple weeks. Just kidding honey.

I don't think anybody makes 4.30's for 8.8 front axle. Go with the 4.56's. At worst you will lose a little mpg on the hwy, but you will have better throttle response. The way I thought of it was, if I went with the 4.10's, I'd always wonder what it would be like with 4.56's. Now, I don't have to wonder.
As far as the diff, I narrowed it down to the Eaton or Detroit TrueTrac. I would have gotten the TrueTrac because its all gears with no clutch packs, but it was a backorder item when I wanted the gears installed and I didn't want to wait. A Trac-Lok would have been plenty for my needs, but again I didn't want that little 'should have' thought gnawing in the back of my mind.
The conventional wisdom is 33" tires + 4.10's = good.
I think 33" tires + 4.56's = better.

Hey Buzzard,
At least you've had the good sense to keep the 68.

Yeah, it's what I learned to drive 25 years ago and has been in the family for its entire life. I've gotta admit that I spent a small fortune restoring it, so I guess I shouldn't be complaining especially since it is a blast to drive with its heavily modded 390.

Well, my gear guy told me the Eaton is just as good as the TrackLock, so he had the Tracklock ordered for me. As far as gears, Im goimg with 4.10's. Im thinking, now this is just thinking, this is as bad as assuming, that for our needs that 4.10's will just barely be enough. You see, Im thinking again,,,that this might be my ticket to tell the wife that we need a chip,aF.I.P.K, better exhaust, ect. Do you see what I mean??? Give me a hell yeah!
