Unhappy Not your average leak

I have a 99 SD 4x4, 7.3 leaking oil. I have looked over the past oil leak problems and it sounds like O-rings on the turbo is the most common. I can't rule it out but I have oil everywhere. It is on the air cleaner, the frame on drivers side, etc. I have tried to locate where the highest point and most forward oil is coming from but front of the valve cover is about the best I've found. I do have oil in the valley but it doesnt seem to be as much splater around the turbo as there is up front. Do I have a O-ring problem? Has 110,000 miles on it, I expect some problems. Wife sayes if it goes to the dealer for repair it will be traded in for a Chevy! HELP!!!!

99 SD Power Stroke, 4x4, Ext cab, bone stock.

I'd suggest washing the engine/bay with a good degreaser. After it dries off, fire it up and watch to see if you can locate the source of the leak.

It sounds like you may have a leak up near the the front of the engine.

Sounds like you've blown a line/fitting/o-ring in the high pressure oil pump (HPOP).

Tell your wife a leaking Ford is still better than any chebbie, plus a new o-ring costs a lot less.

There is a big plug (1-9/16) that has a square drive to fit a 1/2 inch drive ratchet in each end of each head which is probably where your leak is coming from. The O-ring may have gotten chaffed when it was installed at the factory and it took a while to show up. There is just under a quart of oil in each of these oil rails so be prepared for a mess when you take the plug out.

Question Not your average leak

I took alanscott's advice and washed the engine really good and by the time I got back home it was real clear where the leak was coming from but it's not what I had expected. The leak is coming from a plug in the side towards the bottom of the HPOP that cookie88 was talking about. What the heck is the plug for? How do you get to it? Should it have an O-ring or would it just came loose? It is a drop about every 4 seconds. Are there any good manuals out there? Should I just quit being so cheap and take it to the dealer? I'm new to this Diesel thing and forums too. Thank all you guys for the advice. This place is great! Telling everyone that can spell Ford about it!

I'll take a guess. Is it way down low on the back side of the HPOP, with a small electrical connector right above it? That's the oil pressure regulator, also known as the IPR (injection pressure regulator). It is rebuildable, and has two o-rings where it mounts.

EDIT: I missed the "how do you get to it" question the first time round.

You remove the fuel filter/water seperator assembly to gain access to it, unless someone has found an easier way.

The bolt I was telling you about, well I tried to tighten it and now it leaks worse, a lot worse. What the heck is it for???? I've got a picture of one and shows the bolt but I dont know how to post it? The bolt is right under the IPR cookie88 was talking about. Its at the lowest part of the HPOP you can see if you were looking at it from the drivers side. Right to tight and left to loosen, right? It just keeps tuning like its not tightening up..... HELP

Can you e-mail me that picture? There are no bolts below the IPR, the little electrical plug and the "bolt" that sticks out below it are the IPR assembly.

I found the problem and it is a passage port to get oil to the IPR. It is a metric bolt with a shank on the end, behind that is a square looking thing that has oblong ends, right beside that is a small plastic ball. The ball is to seal the small bleed hole in front of the pump. If you had the pump off (the hard way of finding out) and looked on the opposite side of the pump as the IPR there is a small hole going back into the? block? I think? I do know there’s a small hole. I've been told the ball is to keep some pressure in the block to help on the next start so you don’t have to wait for pressure to build up? I think I've talked to every expert in southern Indiana today. I found parts we use to make for a ZTR mower and machined the port again and seems to be working fine. For some reason it doesn’t seem to start as quick as it use to. I'm not a mechanic so it may be something I did wrong but no leak. Thank you everybody for all the advice. Hope I can return the favor.

Would it be easier to go and try and replace the IPR myself or just take it to the dealer and have them do it under warranty for a $100 deductible?
