Man, what a bummer!
Here's the whole story. Two weeks ago, my battery meter dropped considerably on my way home from work. The turn signals also slowed way down. That was a Friday, that Saturday I left for a week. I came home and the truck started fine, and the meter was in the correct place. But after awhile of driving around yesterday, the meter went way down again. I took the alternator and the battery out and had them tested at Schucks. Everything was tested fine. Today on my way home from work, the meter dropped below the normal range. I pulled into the driveway, turned off the motor, waited a couple of minutes, and tried starting it again. It will not turn over. It's got juice, and it's trying to crank.
I also tried pulling fuses yesterday to see if the meter would go up when a particular fuse had been removed (indicating where a short might be). The meter always stayed in the lower region.
As this is my one and only ride, any help would be great.
How old is the battery? Sounds like a heat related problem. Maybe one or some of the plates inside the battery are lose or expanding with heat and shorting out inside the battery itself. Just a guess.
I just got done solving this very problem. The battery had gotten very funky and wouldn't start after the truck got hot, but when I let it sit for a while and cool off it would crank right up. Put a new battery on it, and it solved the problem.
Check the battery and starter cables. They are notorious for corroding on the inside and you'll never notice till something like your problem shows up. And as we all know the hotter the wire is the higher the resistence through it. Also try cleaning all the contact points for the battery as well. Put an ohm meter across the wires and if you get anything other than zero, replace the wires. Good Luck!
I replaced the battery and alternator at the same time tonight. Everything's back to normal (knock on wood). I thought I'd do the two easiest solutions first before I start chasing anything.
