Heavy half?

Chebbie had the model Heavy Half pickup which was nothing more than a 1/2 ton pickup slightly upgraded. I am thinking I have Ford's version of this.

I have the lightest 8 lug rear axle they put in the F250 (Dana 60.3 semi-float). Soft springs, and no sway bars.

Only reason I mention this is I am thinking of upgrading the suspension, but not a lot. This truck will not have a lift kit. It sits high enough for me. My concern is that I was about to put 1600lbs of bag concrete in the bed until I saw how much the truck started squating with less than half that. The door tag says it should take it, but it doesn't look like it.

Would airbags be enough to deal with the weight? And then will the axle take it?

Here is my stock suspension 86 f150 4x4 with 30x9.50s. 3000 pounds. Hauled it a few times. 1600 should be no sweat. Mine sank fast then slowed down.

I must have some wore out springs then. Mine with 800lbs of bag concrete was down that far.

I love how well the truck drives without a load, which is why I was thinking airbags.

Took My Superduty to Home Depot today and had them load a pallet of bag concrete. 42 bags at 80lbs each = 3360 lbs. The Superduty squatted maybe 3". Just under level with the airbags at 40psi. Still had another inch to go before the overloads would touch.

Me thinks I should find some airbags for the 82.

Or not carry any heavy loads in the 82.

Your load carrying capacity is determined by the capacity of the axle and the tires, not by how much it squats. Squatting does affect control going down the road, but nothing else.

Your truck is considered a f250 "light duty" though I am not sure Ford ever used that term. They did use the term "heavy duty" or "HD" for the f250's with the full floating axle.
