Front end lube??
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Jul-02 AT 04:49 PM (EST)]I have a 1990 F-150 4X4 and was condsidering replacing the oil in the front end. Does this need to be changed it's got 126,000 miles on it (I do realize not many of those miles were in 4X4). I think it would have to be pumped out through the hole some how. What oil should I put back in?

Excellent idea to change that oil no matter what! especially at that mileage. Use a good quality hypoid gear oil rated close to 80 weight. You will likely have to use some sort of plunger to suck out the oil through the fill hole. Ford has failed to give us a nice drain plug on them.

Front end lube??
For the price of the cover gasket $6-$10, why not remove the cover and check out the inside of the front end for foreign particles, wear and/or contaminated fluid. If you can get it real clean you could go with synthetic replacement right away. Synthetic and regular hypoid oil doesn't mix, so they say.

dcarling is correct Tony that is why I mentioned about sucking the fluid out. Yes, it would be good for the rear unless he has a 9 inch rear end then the same problem but easier for sure than the front.
