I assume you are not talking about a antifreeze smell?
I would check your drain from the evaporator to make sure it is not plugged. Sounds like you have a colony of mold on it and those can be a pain to irradicate. It stinks because you are not drawing fresh air in when you select max AC. It only recirculates air inside the cabin.
It should be on the right side of the vehicle about where the firewall is. When you run it awhile it should be leaving a puddle of water underneath the vehicle - even after you shut it down. If you don't have a puddle or any sign of water then it is plugged.
yep probably mold. find the tube on the firewall side, look inside
at the same general area. disconnect tube and try using something to blow out or push out with. or vacuum to suck
up. you might have to clean the evaporator fins of the carpet
off too, or else anytime you hit recirc. you have a wake up call.
