Finally got my 81 F100 finished up today. I did the body work & had my uncle paint the truck. This truck has only got 32K original miles. When I got the truck I stripped all the smog control crap off, which only took me about a day and then it took another month to find & plug all the vacuum leaks. Its got a 300 6cyl with a 3spd tranny (3 on the tree) but the motor runs great now without the smog control stuff and the catalytic converter removed. I also put new (bigger) tires and a few other cosmetic things but that was about it.
What's nice is the dash is still in good shape, most of these older trucks had the dash cut-out for an after market radio but this one is in pretty good shape. I did put a replacement dash cover that I still need to paint and I'll need to repaint the interior door panels and have the seat panel re-upholstered on the driver side, but that should be about it.
My wife hates this truck b/c it's just plain ugly and the color is pukey yellow, but I think it's pretty cool. I remember my dad buying this same year truck brand new for his pest control business and I thought at the time, what a tough looking and cool truck it was. By today's standards, it's just plain ugly and low tech....
So now I'm ready for my next project, which is gonna be a 65 F100 on a 95 F150 4WD motor & drive train. This should keep me busy at least until it's cool enough to start fishin again....
That is one nice looking truck. Very clean, straight, and simple. From the outside, it looks like you drove it out of the showroom yesterday afternoon. A little more TLC for the interior, and you will have a real time capsule. I was going to do that with El Guapo, but wound up doing a resto-mod. Do you have more pictures of the interior and engine bay? How are they coming along?
Nothing special under the hood. It's relatively clean, that's about it.
When I got the truck there was a seat cover and I expected the worst when I pulled it off, but the only tear was in the typical spot in the driver seat where you enter/exit. The seat is very strong, not faded and I can get that one panel replaced for about $40.
Other than a few more interior fix's, i.e. anti-rattles in the windows the truck is pretty much done. I've already started on my next project, so this one get's parked in the shop for a while till I need a run to the parts store, which is about twice a day....
Really a nice looking truck. I love the color. Maybe I'm color blind, but it looks tan/brown to me and I love tan colored pickups. Looks like you did some mighty fine work on it.
Yea, actually your right. The exterior is more of a light tan or cream color, not sure what color Ford would classify that color as. But the interior is definitely dog s#$t brown. Now I've just got to find some spray paint to match so I can finish painting the interior plastic panels...
I just recently charged the AC system & was very pleased to find out it blows ice cold air, it's in the mid-high 90's here in Okie-land..
This was my last project, I realize it's not a Ford but it's still a pretty cool old truck.

This truck will run! It's a "frame-off" restoration, so I really hate to get it in the mud, but when I do happen to venture off-road, this tank will just about crawl through anything!
I've just about got this truck back to 100% original. I've done a lot of work inside the cab, which is really difficult b/c they just don't make re-man parts for these old trucks anymore. Most everything I've found is networkin on the net or just plain lookin in the local junk-yards.
Anyway, it's far enough along I can start workin on my next project (65 Ford on a 95 sub-frame) or I may have to finish my old 52 Packard. Just depends on which one my wife tells me to get out of the garage next!!
I'm in Adair, halfway between Pryor & Big Cabin on Hwy 69.
You got a really cool classic car dealership there in Skiatook. I fish Skiatook Lake almost every weekend in the Winter and I've had to stop at that dealership a few times and check out his old cars. Great guy & loves to show off his Shelby and talk old car stuff...

You've talked to Larry, I can tell. He does love cars.
And, I know where Adair is, for sure. Plan to come to an FTE get-together at my place, probably in September. Come down the turnpike, get off on 20 at Claremore, and it isn't very far. You don't have to bring the 81, but I'd love to see it. However, I doubt my 81 will be back from the body shop by then, so there's little to show - although you can read about it in Dad's Truck Build.
