AOD/ driveshaft interchangeability

I installed an '89 AOD out of a van into my daughter's '77 F-100. Everything so far has matched up, until I bought a driveshaft from a wrecking yard... I thought all the driveshaft yokes for an AOD/c-4/c-6 were pretty much interchangeable, but I guess not... The splines seem to match fine, but I cannot get the shaft more than 1.5 to 2 inches into the tailshaft. After some cursory research, I believe that the trans has the smaller bushing, while the shaft is made for a large bushing trans. Does this sound correct, and if so, how will I know what to pull another driveshaft out of. I have also read that I can swap tailshafts and/or bushings. I would prefer not to have to do this, but if it is the easiest/cheapest route, I may consider it. Can a large bushing be swapped into the small bushing tailshaft? Thanks.
