Hello everyone. I am new to the site and figured this would be the best way to get informed about buying a used diesel through actual diesel owners. I'm sure this is like beating a dead horse but I am looking for advice on making an informed buying decision on a used PSD. The vehicle I'm looking at is a 2001 F250 7.3 with 189k miles. Now while I'm new to truck diesels I am familiar with diesels in general. I am an offshore boat captain in the Gulf of Mexico with lots of experience with marine diesels (cummins K38). I am aware that the miles the truck has is not high in relation to diesels but rather how those miles were put on the truck. My question I'm asking is what to look for from the buyer's perspective so I can make a purchase that will last me through the years. Thanks
Some 2001 had the "mechanical diode" in the trans which is a known weak link. Do you have the build date? March 31 or before would have it. If the trans was rebuilt the diode should have been replaced with the newer sprag, so no worries.
Didn't get a chance to look it over yet. When I went today out was raining so bad I had to leave. Will go back tomorrow and check everything out. From what I saw today it looked good, only cosmetic stuff I noticed. I will know more tomorrow when its nice and give it a good look through and test drive.
