Well folks I got the old ball joints out and bought new Moogs to replace. Problem I'm having now is that the lock nut on the lower ball joint keeps spinning the joint and I can't get it to tighten down onto the shaft. Is there a special tool to hold the joint shaft in place while I turn the nut? There's a small rectangular indent on top of the ball joint shaft but I can't seem to hold it with a screw driver.
I see on your profile you are in VA. I'm in southern WV. What part of VA are you in? If you're not too far away, and would want to drive up to my shop, I have all the tools needed and would be happy to help you change them free of charge. I'm sure it won't cost $900 in fuel to get here
I'm replacing ball joints as well. I have the socket for the axle nut. My question is in removing the lock first. It's a round disk with holes in it. I couldn't see a tab to bend back and then remove it. How's this removed? I'd post a photo but not allowed to post attachments....
Jeff
I got it figured out....The part I was referring to is part of the spindle nut. The rotor is off and now to the ball joints....

Reason: Update
I believe that lock ring (round, thin, holes all around) does not have a tab to bend. On the inner part of that ring, there is a tab, but its for alignment only. That ring just slides out off the spindle. Sometimes they are sticky due to grease or corrosion! Hopefully grease... Corrosion is bad! LOL!
I got the new ball joints in and everything back together. Problem I'm having now is a small click coming from the passenger side front wheel hub. It spins freely but there's a click that shouldn't be there. When I remove the hub cover and the first part of the hub body, I can rotate the wheel and the clicking is gone. As soon as I press the hub body back in and install the lock ring the clicking returns. Any body ever deal with this situation? Any suggestions?
