I just got an 85 Bronco V6 for $500.00. The engine runs but I am told has a stuck piston. I would like to replace the engine with a new one. What are my options? Can I put a V8 in it? I have minimal auto experience so nothing supper sophisticated.
I'm sure you could do a V-8 since they fit into a Ranger. I don't know much about swapping them but there are a few guys on our Ranger forum that you could ask if you don't get any answers here.
I've seen a couple of them with 302's and even a 351, but you will probably want to get a stronger tranny as your torque will be almost doubled, especially if you have the 5-speed. I'd go with the 4.0 as it will give you plenty of power for something as lite as a BII.

FWIW: No Ford engine I know of will run with a stuck piston. When a piston gets stuck you end up picking pieces off the ground or with an engine that will not crank over at all.
V-8 is the most expensive and most awesome upgrade. Putting in a 4.0/5 spd from an Explorer/Ranger is nice. If I had a 1985 to keep for a long time and lived in a non smog state or one that was not too tough, I would put in a 302 carb Duraspark (non CPU) , T-5 manual, and nine inch rear end.

Best option, put in a Jasper rebuilt 2.8, used 5 speed, and a Duraspark ignition and ditch the TFI and its dozens of vacuum connections. Total investment about $2000. Jasper rebuilt is worth the $1400.
Thanks for the info. I truely do not know what is wrong with the engine but I do know it doen't run very well, has a horrible pinging noise and leaks oil.
A new engine seems like a good option. I will probably stay with a V6. My son will get the truck when he is 16.
