hey yall. literally just bought an 89 ford bronco 5.8 liter eddie bauer edition. drove it a bit and my temp is up at 230. checked radiator , a bit low but not too much. im worried. my brother thinks either clogged hose or thermostat. any ideas of what it could be? i dont know if its same problem, but when it stared over heatin, i noticed squeelin when i turned and a very bumby ride, and it started smokin a bit. please help! thank you!
Welcome to FTE. This is THE place for Ford truck info. If it is running hot after only a few minutes of driving I would say the thermostat is stuck closed. It could be a clogged radiator, but the thermostat is easier to check, and or replace. Since you just bought the truck, I would replace it as you don't know how long it has been on the truck, and they are cheap.
ok cool. i tested the thermostat. it worked. so im replavcin the water pump. but i think i stripped a bolt. so i gotta get it off tomorrow. ill put it all back together and ifbim still having problems what should i check next? btw, thank you for all the advice man!
Only other major component in the cooling system would be the radiator. If it is not the thermostat or the water pump, then the radiator must be clogged.
ok changed water pump and thermostat. it helped a bit. driving im anywhere between 195 and 210ish. idling it goes up a bit. is that still a problem? or should i be alot lower. it did get up to 220ish as well. but after driving, i didnt notice it go any higher. could that maybe be a fan clutch? or is the 195-210 ok?
man you need to cut back on the driving till you get this figured out otherwise your gonna have worse issues on your hands.
is there a fan shroud on the radiator? in the morning before you start the bronco pop the hood and see if you can spin the fan. its a clutch fan setup and should spin a few times when cold and as the motor warms up it should tighten so it can turn with the motor and cool. also when the bronco gets up to temp check all the hoses by feel. see if any are cool or soft like its not full of fluid.
i was tryin to see if what i replaced fixed it. clutch fan seems to spin normally with the hand test. but i do notice some liquid on it after runnin it. im tryin to figure out how to check tranny fluid on this. it only goes up in temp when im at low speeds.
changed the clutch fan. holy ****, im runnin at 181 degrees!. my next step was the cap. but shes runnin like a champ. i saw some oil on it, so i took it out, sure enough it wasnt sealed. oil or whatevet it was spillin out. replaced and voila! never been happier. thanks so much yall for the advice. i really preciate it!
