This has come up a few times on this board and I would like to know what the cavitation issue is in the 7.3 IDI non-turbo, and what it does to the engine. Secondly, other than keeping your coolant level up to snuff, what else should I be doing?
Cavitation is ... the erosion of the cylinder walls, particularly in diesel engines. It is caused by the burning of the fuel in the cylinders and basically causes small particles of the block and cylinders to break off the main portion of the structure. These particles may float thru the coolant and bounce off another part of the block/cylinder wall or so many of the particles may break away to cause a pin hole in the structure of the block.
You should be using some type of coolant additive to prevent this. Caterpillar has some, INternational has some and Ford will provide you with some, at a higher price of course. There are also test strips to use to be sure you have a correct balance of the product in the cooling system to aid in preventing cavitation.
Thanks for the response. I went over to a couple of other Ford/Diesel message boards and found a link to a company that sells the Motorcraft FW-16 Collant....bought 4 bottles. I have had the collant changed a couple of times by a Ford delearship, but I have know way of knowing it they put in FW-15 or 16. Hopefully I have not damaged the block...will never know until it fails! :-( .
You got to wonder why Ford or International did not make a better attempt at letting customers know about this issue (never mind...can you say Ford Exploder and Firestone). My Dad had this truck before me and he never mentioned this. Better late than never.....
