2001 F350 problem

While driving my 2001 F350 7.3 today running errands it started to have a real concerning issue. Once I slowed down back into my neighborhood it would make a thud, then feel like someone was pushing the brakes (even when i gave it gas). Then it would thud again and drive normal. I'm worried its the transmission getting ready to go Any input?

It almost feels like a really rough engine breaking action. It does it for a short period, I let off the throttle and get back on it and it drives normal for a short time then starts doing it again...I have no idea what is causing this.

If its the A/C compressor that baby is about to lock up. You should be able to unplug the compressor to rule that out.

It would make me wonder about a torque converter that going haywire some how.

Best of luck

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I would be ecstatic if its just the ac compressor. I will check it out. I really hope its something simple. I know with the miles my truck has its only a matter of time for the transmission...but pleeaaaase not now! We are currently having to replace the trans in my wifes Subaru.
fbh31118 I was wondering about the torque converter also. When it does this I really cant accelerate at all until it stops. It's got me baffled. It doesn't feel as though the trans is slipping...and it shifts fine in between this happening. Whats got me worried is that whatever is doing this is actively slowing the trucks momentum....acting just like an engine brake.

When it happens just turn the mode switch to off. If that fixes it then you know its the A/C compressor. My guess would be that the torque converter is not unlocking, or maybe the trans isnt shifting out of gear.

Any chance the OD light is flashing on the gear selector?

Can you get someone to see if it has any fault codes in it?

I haven't seen any flashing lights anywhere. I will see about pulling codes.

The AC compressor will cycle on and off even when the control switch is off.

Well I took it for a drive again to mess around with it and try to narrow down when/why it happens...It was seemingly doing it mostly when shifting to 3rd. It would coast and idle fine if I quickly shifted into neutral when it started...which leads me to believe it is in fact the trans I checked the fluid and it seems a bit burnt. I think I know what happens from here I have no clue what I'm going to do. My wife's Subaru is in the shop right now with a bad trans. When it rains it pours I guess. I may be riding a bicycle for a while because there is NO way I can afford to do two transmission replacements so close together.

Hang tough, Bro. All you can do is all you can do! Maybe somebody knows of somebody in your area who can help somehow.
Good luck!

I'm 99.9% sure you are right ...the compressor will NOT cycle when the switch is off...

Sounds similar to mine years ago. In 2001 the trans had a mechanical diode that would fail up to a certain build date. I want to say Oct and before but don`t remember for sure. I was hoping it was the computer so I changed that first, no luck there. 358k on odometer now and I changed trans. at around 160k.
Best of luck and post up results.
