I've been going through the catalogs and I have been Googling until I turn blue in the face but I just can't find a exact replacement o-ring for my 1978 F150 300 with a Duraspark II distributor. I've been working on oil leaks since I got the truck and now it's down to this and the rear seal. Thanks for any ideas!
There was someone here on FTE who tried a couple of different rings with no luck sealing it or he couldn't get the dizzy back in. He Mic'd the groove and was going to order one from a o-ring manufacturer. I have to try and find him and see if knows which o-ring he used. Ttyl
You should be able to take the old 0-ring into the parts store and match it up with one. Most part stores have a box that has various sized o-rings behind the counter that you can match up. If the old o-ring is too broken to be able to match the size, then take your distributor in and match it up that way. The good thing about o-rings is that it doesn't have to be the exact size to work properly.
What you would be looking for is one thick enough to fit the groove, be snug on the housing, and extend beyond the housing probably no more than 1/32". That way it will seal, but not be too thick that it gets cut during installation. The o-rings are cheap enough that you can take a couple of different sizes with you without costing allot (they're usually $.35-.50 each). Also you will want to use some oil or light film of grease to aid in installation.
I just bought a set of intake gaskets from NAPA and it came with the rubber o-ring for the distributor. It's not a typical o-ring, its more of a cone shape.
according to Napa & Oreilly websites, 5511 Fel Pro is the o-ring you seek. Haven't played with a 6 in a row for a while, don't remember if its an "o" ring, or a tapered rubber seal from the factory...
I had seen that 5511 O-ring before in my searching but I thought it said was for the V8s only. A distributor hole should be the same for I6's or V8's...? Ill call my local Napa and talk to them about it.
As far as going to Car Quest or Napa and looking through their kits, they tend to not restock the commons sizes. Been there. And where I live you have to hit the long road just to get to the two stores and if you want more stores it'll be a really long drive. Thanks all for the help! BTW, Is Number Dummy still around? I ain't seen him on here lately.

Reason: Spelling
I'm in the exact same situation, so I went and picked up the 5511. Maybe someone packaged the wrong o-ring, but there is no way it fits the 300 dizzy.
The parts stores list it for the 300, but Fel-Pro's site only lists it for v8s.
The one I got is way too big.
I got out my digital caliper and this is what I measured: dizzy groove - 1.15", o-ring inner dia. - 1.14", o-ring outer dia. - 1.45", o-ring width - .15". The cross section is almost square.
In checking industrial o-ring suppliers and manufacturers, no one has an off the shelf replacement. Perhaps we could do a group buy, as some of these companies will custom make whatever is needed, but typically require a certain quantity to be ordered. They will even reverse engineer an original to ensure exact fitment.
What I don't understand is how they are supplied in the master kits, but not individually. Somebody somewhere must make them.
I'm baffled as to why I can't find a replacement DRT either. I tried to find a replacement last year and gave up. Then this year I thought I'll get one I'm sure of it! Not! Lol...
