Cool Tire sizes

I gotta an Excursion with 305/50/20 tires on it and factory suspension. Can I put something like a 340/*/* without having to buy a kit?.

another question: I'm new to the tire world and have been looking around the net for this information and I've seen tire sizes described as- for example- "285/50/20" or "37 X 12.5"
What's the difference between these two sets of numbers and do they mean the say thing?. Any help would much very much appreciated.

Thanks fellas,

Tris

i have never heard of a 340/*/* before.... here is a quick example.. a 315/75/R16 is the same as a 35X12.50R16. a 325/80/16 is the same as a 37X13.50R16... search the web and magazines, they have some charts
