The brakes in my 78 have always been a little mushy since I bought it. But today the peddal was goin all the way to the floor. So, I was working on bleeding them, but there didn't seem to be any improvement. Then I saw this. Does anyone know what this pin does and why it would be hanging out like that. On the other side the head is flush with the brake housing. I think a rear brake job is in my future.
IIRC, that pin goes through your backing plate and holds your shoes in place. There is a spring and little clip on the front side that secures them; evidently it is missing. The clip must of popped off and your drums and sagging. If you rebuild, buy the hardware kit for that drum. It will replace all the clips, springs, pins, etc. you need.
What worries me more is the fluid. That always tell ya that a wheel cylinder is bad. That is brake fluid leaking out.
Now might be a good time to consider a rear disc brake conversion. I own a 75 and did my brakes several times, but was never satisfied, never felt quite sure and safe, until I converted to 4x disc with a hydro boost unit. Now, brake-wise it is like driving a 2013 truck. They are that good. kevin
Thanks for the info. The fluid is from my dribbling when I was bleeding them. What did you use for the disc conversion? What did it cost? I might consider if not too spendy.
I answered my own question with a little searching. Just ordered brackets from greatlakesoffroad. Understand the parts I need to build the back brakes, but there doesn't seem to be any mention about the proportioning valve. Do I need to change it?
