6.4 problems general.

Never in this section because im a 7.3 guy, but here for some basic information.

Looking at getting my dad a newer diesel, hes running a cummins 5.9 right now which is amazing but getting up in miles. So he wont let me buy him new, but fell in love with an 08 4x4 quad cab long bed 6.4 With 80k miles.

Now what I need from you guys is the problem areas on these trucks? What goes out? Needs to be deleted? Anything to be very reliable and stock.

Thanks for input in advance.

6.4 with the emissons is a hwy/towing motor. That is where it runs best and has the fewest of problems.

Radiators are a weak spot. Anything 08 and up to present have plastic on the ends of the radiator and they are prone to leaking. So be sure to check those seams.

Radiator hoses sometimes leak two. Updated hoses are white where it connects to the motor and now has a double 0-ring design. Check for leaks with a flashlight.

Just general checking all fluids.

Should have the dpf still on so check the tail pipe. Should be pretty clean to maybe a little gray. If otherwise then we need to find out why. Maybe deleted?

Does your place in Texas do emissions testing? Probably need to find out.

Hey OP, being in Glen Rose, you are not that far from the DFW metroplex. I would try and find out if the truck was used in the city or if it is local. If it was used in the city, I probably would back away. Hate to say that as I love my 08. When I hit the Metroplex, it plays havic on mileage and regens and my truck just does not like that stopping and starting......If this truck is local to Glen Rose, I would also look at seeing if its is an oilfield truck. I know a lot or drillin' has been going on around there in the Barnett Shale. If its oilfield, chances are it has idled a bunch. That is NOT good on these trucks unless the high idle was used.
Since you are outside of the Metroplex, then you do not have the pollution checks that they do up the road. I am here in Waco and we do not have them yet, but Austin and Ft. Worth do, so I am thankful. If you are like me and have a "friendly" inspection station, not to much to worry about if you decide to delete the DPF. That seems to be the biggest headache on these trucks.

Thanks for the information. Now I'm at a computer instead of my phone, so the right text and punctuation will be used. Phones can be a pain sometimes.

This truck is not in Glen Rose, it is in the Mansfield area. Most that area is still open road, so the highway running should be the majority of it. Here in Glen Rose where he lives is his street and then highway, so this will be mainly highways, with a couple red lights in town.

As for the truck I just did a simple look at the fluids, and all the interior to make sure all was working properly and seemed up to par. From first glance it was (did not know about the radiator problem), and very clean all the way around. Still will have to pull a carfax and all the other material as I get closer to doing this.

But this will probably be his last truck (his words, not mine) because of his age. So this will stay a mainly stock truck unless the need arises due to issues. That was why the post was stated how to keep it as reliable as possible. Don't know what the DPF is, just heard people talk about it, so that I really cant comment on.

Thanks for the info.

DPF is diesel Particulate filter. used to trap soot so you have clean pipes. Once full you have to regenerate it. That is done by shooting an injection of diesel down the exhaust to superheat or burn the soot.

how long that takes all depends. I have had them as short as 4 miles and as long as 20.

Interval between also varies according to use and fuel quality. most regen around 200-300 miles apart. Fail safe backstop is aprox 630 miles.

Just bought an 08 XLT supercab 68k on it. a buddy of mine was telling me about the dpf delete. Is there one in particular that's better than others or is there just one? Also, was told to get a tuner (anyone got recommendations?)

You have to use a tuner in conjuction with removing the DPF otherwise you will be in eternal regen.

there are a few out there.
Spartan
H&S if you can find there
SCT
Dpf-r and R+.

I have no real recommendations myself. I am still running my DPF with the Banks 6 gun with no issues. If I had issues then I would probably get the DPF-R with no increase in HP due to the fact that I tow heavy and stock power levels are best for that imho.

Question for you. What exactly does the banks six gun do for you? I have a 2010 F250 4x4 Lariet (FX-4) and I am flipping the coin to see if I want to invest in doing the DPF delete when my 5 years is up. I only tow a 5000lb boat about 1-2 times a month for a short distance (15-20 miles). I have towed it once last year on a 400 mile round trip. I live in south Georgia and tow mostly in that region (Northeast Florida also). So not much in the hills department. If I am not towing, I drive the truck every now and then, a mixture of highway and around city driving. I do take it on trips out to Texas, and New England 1 or twice a year.

Banks 6 gun is a clean tuner. DPF on tuning. Maintains all factory safeties. CARB certified for those that have emission testing.

It allows up to 95 more hp and I think (if I recall around 130 more FT of TQ on the highest setting.

I does allow a bit better in fuel ecomony and if you desire you can get the IQ for monitoring your engine vitals and retrieving/clearing codes.

I run on level two except when heavy towing (more than 10K).

It also tends to increase the length between regens as well.

Just a all around little bump in power with a slight bump in mpgs.

Big plus is if you break down somewhere you don't have to go look for your dpf and put it back on.

You can take the banks completely out in about 5min on the side of the road if you had too.

Get it from them direct for the best prices and support. Look at the IQ as well so you can read the codes and see your temps.

You might be aware of this

We traded for an 08 with all deletes. Because of them, it makes it illegal for us to resell it (wont pass inspection). Customer got less on their trade in because of the additional cost to restore the truck to legal configuration.
