Hey All,
I am having trouble finding anywhere in my chilton manual on how to change an oil sending unit. Is this hard? I am very interested in changing it on my own.
simple job if you have a big enough socket . the sender is up and just forward of the oil filter. go to the auto part store and let the pull one for you and look at it and see if you have a large enough socket.disconnect wire unscrew the old and screw in the new, tighten up reinstall wire and your good to go. oh yeah just check for leaks when you are done
If you remove the power steering pump from its bracket it's a pretty easy job, although having the socket would be easier. I had mine off to do the water pump so I swapped out my sender while I was in there.
Thanks Guys! Ill do it today! Mine is leaking oil out the top, that is why I decded it needed replaced. Do I have to worry about oil up that high getting out? I will obviously do it when the engine is cold, but us that higher then the oil line?
I guess I need to buy one, too. No oil pressure for the trip to work today. I used a deep well 1 1/16" socket, no need to remove any other brackets. My wire was corroded on the unit, though, so a little soldering is in order, too. If I still have no oil pressure after this, I guess the 460 project will start sooner than I thought!
I replaced mine, what an easy fix. The old unit was on a little tighter than finger tight and the new one went in at about the same tention. Before when I was at an idol and the engine warm the guage would read at or below the "N". Now it reads no lower than the middle of the "O" and usually staying inbetween the "O-R" range. A lot easier than I thought and a lot cheeper than going right to my oil pump as the cause of my guage reading so low. Thanks Guys!!!
Hey guys, my oil pressure gage doesn't fluctuate at all, it comes up to just above the bracket indicating the normal range and stays there no matter what the rpm's. I'm considering replacing mine with a mechanical gage, of course my voltmeter only works once in a while and my gas guage jumps around anytime it has more than a half tank. Maybe I need to replace the whole cluster.
It's an easy conversion. However, on my 351, I had to get a few brass fittings to move the sender since the new sender was too fat to fit where the old one was.
So I think I am going to go back on my oil preasure statment I maid in the previous post. I was at a light and the truck was idoling around .5 RPM's and the preasure dropped below the "N" in normal, and almost to the "L". I guess I should look into replacing the oil pump? If so, should I get a high volume pump like the one HERE ? Do I need a gasket set? Is there anything else I need for the job as far as parts go? How much labor can I get wrapped into it if I have a garage do it?
Thanks Again!
Ryan
