Hessitation?

Hey guys,

I got a new-to-me 96 F350 7.3 and im having a hard time figuring out why she has a hard time revving past 2600 rpm and blows white/blue smoke during the hesitation. The engine has almost 400,000 miles so it could be a plethora of things.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Gus

Sounds like you probably have some injector oring problems for one thing.

Welcome to fte.

Thanks
This is my first ford Powerstroke and I'm pretty clueless, so if I ask some stupid questions I apoligize.

Is there any easy way to check to see if it really is the o-rings while still in the engine? Or am I going to need to take them out to see if they're busted?

There aren't any dumb questions. Don't worry about that. Open the fuel filter lid and see if you can see any small particles in there, ie oring particles. There is also a screen in the fuel bowl, about an inch down on the driver side, clean it off with a qtip with the cotton removed, or something like that. I bet it has many oring pieces on it and is gummed up pretty bad. You'll need to remove the fuel filter.

With 400k I'd do a compression check before I spent any money

Also just found out that my newly rebuilt E40D doesn't want to shift into 3rd or 4th gear.

Welcome to FTE! When you remove the fuel filter, see if the filter and the fuel in the bowl are real black. That's also a good sign of bad injector o-rings.

No, the filter and fuel were not black, and I didn't find any o-ring pieces in the bowl. But I did notice there were itty bitty tiny shiny bits floating around in the fuel, looked like metal shavings. Any ideas?

And if my memory serves me right, I think it had an EBPS circuit error.

Don't worry about EBPS. The only thing it controls is the open/close EBPV

How long have you had the truck? Do you know if the orings or injectors themselves have ever been changed? Your symptom in the first post is a classic injector oring issue. But with those miles, if no injector work has ever been done, they may need some work too. If you do get under the valve covers, it would be a good idea to do a compression test like Mike said.

Just bought the truck. The previous owner worked out on the pipeline with the truck and he ended up blowing out the front main on the transmission from so much abuse. So we bought it for 2k

We needed a heavy duty truck to help start our business because my '01 Dodge 1500 can't handle 13,000 pounds behind her safely like we need.

Is replacing the injector o-rings a difficult and expensive job?

I have no clue as to what kind of work the injectors have had, if ever in their lives.

Check the oil level in the crank case and the HPOP reservoir.

It doesn't sound like the injectors o-rings are the problem.
