MAF vs. speed density

I am beginning to look around for a used extended cab pickup (F150 or F250), in order to give me the ability to use the pickup with the kids in the back...

I have looked at new ones, and just cannot seem to find myself affording one of those right now...

However, I could prolly spring for a mid 90's model..

Wondering about the mass air flow issue..Would anyone be able to tell me which models I should look at that WOULD have mass air, under which engine types? Been looking around for that info without much luck..

Also, in general, are there any reasons for picking certain years above others in the 1993-96 range? I would be looking for an automatic, V8 (302 or 351)

Do the mass air's get better mileage than the speed density setup's (I know gearing and such makes a bigger diference). I would be looking for a daily driver, 95% highway..never had a 4x4 but would love to try one on...

Any tips would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks

MAF vs. speed density

I have a 93 f150(351 auto) and I love it. That was the last year for speed density. 94 was the first year for roller lifters in the pickups. I have heard that mid 90s the e4od had the bugs worked out of them. No problems with mine at 127000. As for maf im not sure which is better. As with anything, there will be certain tradeoffs. However, I do like the thought of roller lifters as OE. Just a couple of thoughts. Later

MAF vs. speed density

Just a note about kids in the back of an extended cab, mid-90s pickup (I have a '95). I had to hang pillows across the back so the kid's heads wouldn't bonk the window--few things irritated the wife so much (and she'd always blame it on the stick shift!).

From the above, it sounds like I have mass air on mine. All I know is it runs great! I am very happy with it, but I don't really do any performance mods, which I think the other kind of air flow detector is supposed to be much better for.

I'd get the straight six over the V8 unless you are doing significant and heavy towing.

INLINE SIX POWER!
300 Cubic Inches of Low RPM Truck Torque! And twin-I-beams too!

MAF vs. speed density

The easiest way to tell is if there's two hoses coming out of the air box, it's speed density. If there's only one that branches to two and a sensor on it, it's mass air. Everything (1/2 ton) was MAF in 1996, Automatic V8's had it a couple years earlier, I don't know about the I6.

Actualy Mas Air came in SOME of the '95 Inline 6's. It only came in ones that were sold in California.
