I have an '84 F-250 4wd with a '92 7.3L engine. i'm having some problems with my antifreeze pouring out all over the ground. It will stay in for about 4-5 days after I put more in, but then it runs out again. This first started happening about 2 weeks ago, before that it was a very slow leak. As a result of the slow leak and the majority of roads where i live being unpaved, there is a thick build-up of sludge on the underside of the engine and the frame in the area i suspect the leak to be in. The majority of the build-up, and the highest point i can find sludge on, is near the vacuum pump, it almost looks like it might be coming from the top of the oil pan.
What i'm looking for are ideas on where it might be coming from, i realize that's difficult without being able to see the truck, but any help is appreciated. Any products I might be able to find in an extremely rural area that would remove the sludge, i've tried washing it off, to no avail. Or a link to somewhere I might be able to find a diagram of the cooling system so that i know where specifically to check. I have a chilton's truck manual and a haynes diesel engine manual and i havent been able to find one in either.
Thank you.
Run it up on some ramps, then give it a good cleaning underneath. Set the AC on high if it has it. Fire it up and wait. Make sure you let the block dry before you fire it up so you canfind a leak easier. I used my air compressor to dry it. This is the easiest, old school way I know... Hope it helps..
If you think it could be coming from right above the oil pan check your frost plugs or your block heaters if you have them installed.
Easiest way to clean would be a pressure washer if there is one available otherwise your probably looking at some kind of solvent a brush and a scraper.
