Good day! I have a bit of a different problem that I hope can be solved, I recently bought a 99 f-250 Super Duty, 7.3 diesel, 2wd, auto, x-cab. Very nice for its age. The previous owner told me that the engine had been replaced with a new/rebuild about 73k miles ago(283k on the clock now) but had lost the paperwork. I know, sounds like a story to me too, but he seemed like an honest individual so I bought the truck any way. I found the engine serial numbers where they were supposed to be-stickers all gone-, on the block next to the oil filter. The 444 designation is still visible, as well as the last 7 numbers of the serial, 1020274. However, the first part of the original serial number has been stamped over by a new, larger case number, 296987, and another number stamped on the block just below it, 1110606, with the same larger case. Is there a database somewhere I can go to and use these numbers to find out about this engine? It is obvious, to me anyway, that someone has done at least a partial rebuild on this engine or why go to the trouble stamping new numbers on the block. The engine has also been painted black, no overspray in the engine compartment, valve covers gray. -Jeff
If it was done at Ford, there should be info about it on the OASIS report. Otherwise, the only way to find anything out would be contact the place that did the work. The good news is - if its running good 73k miles later, they didn't screw up anything tooo bad!!
I would have been way more curious WHY the engine was replaced. Did they use the wrong coolant and trash the block? Too many miles in an 80E toon and cracked a piston? If so, they may have just rebuilt/replaced the bottom end and just slapped the old heads back on. It's certainly not something to lay awake worrying about at nite anyway - but could be useful info if ya ever have a problem.
OASIS is the vehicle service history stored by Ford. Any work done at a dealership should be listed in this report. You can ask a dealer for one, but ya might have to pay for it. Google ford oasis report...
80E is a custom program or 'chip' that increases power, but has been blamed for some broken engines (cracked pistons).
